Previously he held different teaching and administrative positions in various Turkish universities as well as research positions at the University of Athens, the EU Institute for Security Studies, Harvard University, and the Richardson Institute for Peace Studies. In addition to serving on the advisory and executive boards of several national and international research centres and various scholarly journals, he has published extensively on Black Sea issues and Turkish foreign and security policies.
